ARRIVAL & DEPARTURE:
Rafts, Ropes, and Restoration on the American River
Our trip begins in the Sierra foothills on the banks of the American River’s South Fork
in Coloma, CA. The site where the discovery of gold sparked the gold rush and now
one of the most popular whitewater rivers in the US, we set up camp and the fun
begins. With experienced guides, bond with fellow participants on a ropes course
and an exciting whitewater raft trip through class II and III rapids. Help preserve
nature and history in a hands-on habitat restoration project with the American River
Conservancy.
Mountain Stream and Alpine Lake Investigation
Journey to higher elevations and explore beautiful mountain streams and high alpine lakes in El Dorado National Forest. Investigate stream ecology hands-on and learn about aquatic invertebrates. Don’t forget your camera! Alpine wildflowers peak in the summer and you can capture the colorful display.
Lake Tahoe Multi-Sport and Trail Project
We hop over to Lake Tahoe and spend several days enjoying camping along North America’s largest alpine lake. Visit a fire-scarred forest and unravel the mysteries of fire ecology. Hop on bikes for a leisurely ride along the lake or take a fast-paced mountain bike ride in the National Forest. Then we’ll
spend a morning getting our hands dirty creating a community garden
with the Tahoe Resource Conservation District.
Eastern Sierra Journey through the Past and Present
The Sierra’s east side offers a steeper perspective of this enchanted mountain
range. Visit towns from the past and present, including the ghost town Bodie
and Mammoth Lakes. Paddle Mono Lake’s salty waters and marvel at the
mysterious tufa towers. Hear about the value of forest restoration projects
with Friends of the Inyo and put your knowledge to practical use.
Meadows and Mountain Passes in Yosemite
Our trip concludes with a multi-day backpacking trek through meadows and mountain passes in Yosemite. One of the largest National Parks, Yosemite boasts grand views of granite peaks, wildflower meadows, and abundant wildlife. Whether it is your first time or you are an experienced backpacker, you will feel well prepared for our
final adventure.
Adios ‘til Next Time
Take in views of Yosemite Valley and other memorable landmarks, including
El Capitan and Half Dome. Volunteer for a morning with the National Park
Service staff and help restore an impacted meadow.
Then drive to the American River for one more evening of fun. With our
new friends, we will celebrate our trip at a local outdoor restaurant along
the American River.
