Will I have fun?
We sure hope so! If you like spending time outdoors and are interested in hiking, paddling, adventuring and trying new things, this is the trip for you. As with most new experiences, it is important that you go into an Epic Sierra trip with an open mind and open heart. You will explore some incredible places and meet some phenomenal people. This is not a trip for troubled teens to rehabilitate. The trip is intended to provide teens a great time and learn about the environment along the way.
What does my Epic Sierra trip include?
Price includes camping accommodations (including tents) and equipment, travel expenses during the trip, most meals, entrance fees, and all gear and fees associated with trip activities.
What does the trip price not include?
Price does not include travel to the start point, personal belongings (and a pack to hold it), sleeping bag, a few “going out” meals, travel and medical insurance, souvenirs, gifts and extra snacks. A detailed packing list is provided when you register for an Epic Sierra trip.
Can I get a day-to-day breakdown of activities and locations?
We provide a broad outline and description of our 7-day and 14-day programs online. Accommodations and activities are booked in advance and any trip changes will be clearly communicated with you and your family.
I am ready to sign up. What is the application process?
Make sure you have reviewed the website thoroughly. Then print out and send us a 2012 Epic Sierra Application, with terms and conditions, and a trip deposit as soon as possible. We will contact you for a phone interview. Upon acceptance, we will send important trip documents to fill out. When we receive these completed documents and your final payment, you will be set to go.
Wait, phone interview? How can I prepare?
We want to make sure every participant is interested and dedicated to our program. If you convey a positive attitude, have a willingness to try new things, and are in good physical and mental health, we will invite you on one of our trips.
What are my payment options?
Fill out a 2012 Epic Sierra Application and follow instructions on the form. You can also make a secure payment online on Epic Sierra’s American River Conservancy page. Call or email us if you have further questions.
Do you have trip scholarships?
We do! With support from Mountain Hardwear’s “Send a Kid to Camp Campaign,” we can offer partial scholarships for eligible teens. Download a 2012 Scholarship Application or contact us for more information. The deadline to apply is April 16, 2012.
Is there any way I can go on a trip for free?
Yes! Royal Robbins and the American River Conservancy have partnered to sponsor an essay contest. The winner will receive one all expenses paid Rocks, Rivers, and Ranges trip. Check our website in the spring when the contest goes live.
I would like to hear from someone who has gone on an Epic trip - can I contact parents or participants from previous trips?
We are happy to provide references, parents and their teens, from past Epic Sierra trips. Feel free to also view our testimonial page and read stories from Epic Sierra in the news.
How safe are your trips?
Epic Sierra staff have led environmental and travel adventure programs throughout the Sierra. We work with reputable professionals and organizations that follow appropriate industry and safety standards. Our leaders undergo detailed wilderness training and hold Wilderness First Responder (WFR), First Aid and CPR certifications.
What if I am new to some of these activities?
All activities are led by professional guides and outfitters. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned outdoors person, our experienced leaders will provide the proper preparation and equipment for a fun and safe experience.
How can I physically prepare for an Epic Sierra trip?
We aren’t competing in a triathlon or running a marathon, but we do our fair share of physical activity. We recommend that you are comfortable walking for several hours and practice carrying a heavy backpack.
How can I contact friends and family while on an Epic Sierra trip?
We strive to disconnect participants from electronic devices, including cell phone and internet communication. On the 14-day trip, participants will be able to communicate with family via pay phone approximately midway through our trip. Electronic devices that don’t benefit the group will be sequestered on the first day and returned on the last day.
What if my family needs to get in touch with me?
All Epic Sierra trip leaders carry phones (mobile and in some instances satellite) for emergency use. If your family needs to reach you for an urgent reason, they will be provided a trip contact number they can use 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
What about travel and medical insurance?
All participants are required to carry medical insurance. We highly recommend securing travel insurance for your trip. On trips, medical treatment will be addressed with appropriate staff assistance and at the nearest facility available. Epic Sierra does not cover treatment and transport expenses.
What day and time should I book my flight?
Epic Sierra will provide transportation from the Sacramento Airport on the start and end day of each trip. Please notify Epic Sierra staff for pickup and drop off schedule before making your flight reservation. If you are arriving by car, we strongly encourage participants to meet the group in Coloma. Meeting location, time, and details will be provided upon confirmed registration.
How many trips do you offer? Do you have programs for younger children or adults?
Epic Sierra Adventures offers teens 14-day trips and, new this year, a 7-day adventure. In August, we will launch our first adult Epic Sierra trip. For more information about other environmental education programs and upcoming adult trip, visit the American River Conservancy’s website. ARC also offers day and short overnight nature camp programs for youth. Please view the ARC camp descriptions for more possibilities.
I am a teacher and would like to take a class on an Epic Sierra trip. Do you offer group rates?
If you would like to schedule a group, please contact us and we will go over possible dates and group options. All trips posted are available for registration on an individual basis.
